I'm still working on the next comic page, but I thought I could post this character sketch of Lucky for your enjoyment. I know I suck enough that he isn't coming through in the comic pages as well as I'd like. But this is the character sketch I am operating off of, and I think it expresses exactly who he is perfectly.

Well, I imagine that, like all kinds of painting, it just takes a few years of work before you'll feel comfortable with it. You can learn a lot reading the help files that come with Photoshop, and there are a bunch of tutorials on dA by artists much better than I am which describe their various techniques. But given that every artist seems to do it their own way, I've concluded you may as well just experiment until you find something that works for you.

To specifically state how this one was done: there is a base b&w scan of the drawing, followed by an "overlay" layer to color the lines (you can be sloppy - it is invisible over the white parts), then a "multiply" layer to add the main colors (takes the longest - blocked in with a big brush, then shaded/blended with a small brush at 20-30% transparency), and finally another "multiply" layer at 20% transparency filled with a texture photo I liked (there are lots of free texture photos out there you can use - they keep the digital from looking too "airbrushed").

I colored it using a Photoshop multiply layer (b&w = pencil). So technically it is half digital... in the quirky no-man's land deviantArt has no place for.
